When on your daily commute and inevitably come across someone in need, how do you react? When you wittiness a mother trying to carry a baby stroller up a flight of stairs, or see someone has dropped a glove. Do you like most others just go about your business, assuming that someone else will help the poor schmuck? Is this avoidant behavior systemic of our cold callous society? OR are you just an asshole?
Think about it.

I stop to help about 90% of the time. If someone leaves his/her scarf when departing the train I'll call to them and throw it their way. I hold doors for people who don't have a free hand. When someone drops their shit I will help them pick it up. Also, I find that a sympathetic glance is incredibly welcome when someone is dealing with something unpleasant.
ReplyDeleteBut. That other 10% of the time. I consciously decide not to help them. I don't think "someone else will help them". Oh, no, it is nothing quite so indifferent. I think "I am full of misery and feeling completely misanthropic today. Fuck 'em."
Very interesting question... It depends if the person looks like a serial killer or not :)
